SPORTS minister Sunday Dare has announced that the Super Eagles will begin their preparations for the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Abuja.

The tournament is scheduled for 9 January to 6 February in Cameroon.

Dare spoke about the team’s camping on Tuesday during an interview on a TVC sports programme in Lagos.

He said his ministry and the Federal Capital Territory are working together to provide the Super Eagles with a conducive environment to train and prepare for the tournament.

The Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja was recently rehabilitated after years of neglect, and the minister is keen for it to host national team matches.

The minister is confident that the team will not disappoint Nigerians at the AFCON, insisting that they can improve on their third-place finish at the last edition in Egypt in 2019.

“I have no doubt that with the quality of the personnel (both players and coaches) in our team, we can go all the way in Cameroon,” he said.

“We finished third in Egypt the last time out, we can do even better this time around. We just have to develop confidence in ourselves and do the hard work on the pitch.”

The Super Eagles are in the same group as Egypt, Guinea Bissau and Sudan.
