EGYPT’s Al Ahly won their eighth CAF Super Cup on Wednesday night with a tense 6-5 penalty shootout victory over Morocco’s Raja Casablanca.
The CAF Champions League holders scored a last-gasp equaliser to make full-time scores 1-1 and take the game to penalties before securing victory over the CAF Confederation Cup winners.
Raja’s Abdelilah Madkour skied his sudden death penalty to hand Ahly the trophy, after all the first five shooters had scored from the spot.
Mohamed Taher scored late for Al Ahly in the 90th minute to break Raja’s hearts, who had scored what they thought was the winner in the 13th minute.During the shootout, both sides were perfect in the first five.
Ali Maaloul, Badr Benoun, Percy Tau, Ahmed Radwan and Taher all scored for Ahly while Mohamed Azrida, Zakaria El Wardi, Marouane Hadhoudi, Mahmoud Benhalib and skipper Mohsine Mouataouali netted for Raja.
In sudden death, Akram Tawfik scored the first for Ahly, but Madkour’s kick was wide of the mark for Raja.
Raja had taken the lead in the 13th minute of regulation time when Ahly defender Yasser Ibrahim scored an own goal under pressure at the Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium in Qatar.Mohamed Magdy Afsha came close to equalising for Al Ahly with a volley from distance, but keeper Zniti saved the effort, as the Egyptians piled on the pressure.
South Africa forward Percy Tau also came close for Ahly with nine minutes left on the clock when he was played through, but his shot went just wide.
Ahly’s persistence finally paid off just before the the end of the game with Taher finishing off a move that involved former Brighton player Tau.
