DESPITE calls from back home for him to resign or be sacked, Ghana’s head coach Milovan Rajevac is digging his heels in.
The 68-year-old Serbian has been under severe fire after leading the Black Stars to their worst Africa Cup of Nations outing in recent memory.
Under his guidance, the four-time African champions were unceremoniously bundled out of the 2021 AFCON on Tuesday night after a shock 3-2 defeat to newcomers Comoros.
They were eliminated after claiming just one point from three matches and finishing bottom of their group behind Morocco, Gabon and Comoros.
It is the first time since 2006 that the Black Stars would crash out at the group phase while it is the first time ever they would exit an AFCON tournament without winning a single match.
Plenty of Ghanaian journalists and fans have been calling for Rajevac’s head since Tuesday night, but he has insisted on staying to achieve his ‘target’.
“I came to Ghana to qualify the team for the World Cup,” Rajevac said during his post-match interview.
“That is my primary target. I will stay and lead the team in the March play-offs.”
Rajevac is in his second spell with Ghana after leading them to the quarter-finals of the 2010 World Cup in South Africa.
He quit for Saudi Arabia club Al Hilal shortly after the World Cup and worked with the Qatar, Algeria and Thailand national teams before he was rehired by Ghana in 2021 to rescue their 2022 World Cup qualifying campaign.
