Cristiano Ronaldo returned to United’s starting line-up but it was 19-year-old Anthony Elanga who struck first in the 55th minute, running on to Fred’s clever ball before finishing smartly with his head.
Another youngster Mason Greenwood increased Manchester United’s advantage seven minutes later on the breakaway, tapping home from Bruno Fernandes’ assist.
Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score his first goal since October, drilling the ball into the top corner from another Fernandes assist 13 minutes from time as Ralf Rangnick’s side sealed the points.Ivan Toney cut United’s lead with a finish from inside the box in the 85th minute but it was too little, too late for Brentford.
United moved up to within two points of fourth-placed West Ham with the win, while still having a game in hand on the Hammers.
Spurs rose to fifth place, one point off West Ham and with three games in hand, after a dramatic 3-2 win over Leicester City at the King Power Stadium.
Zambia striker Patson Daka scored for the hosts but Harry Kane equalised for Tottenham as the first half ended 1-1.
All the drama was saved for added time, with Tottenham substitute Steven Bergwijn scoring twice in the fifth and seventh minutes of injury time after James Maddison had given Leicester a 2-1 lead in the 76th minute.
