FORMER Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr could be leading a team against the Nigerian side in two months’ time, if reports from Ghana are to be believed.
Ghanaian outlets, especially Ghanaweb.com, are claiming that the German is being seriously considered for the role of Black Stars head coach.
The Ghana Football Association is looking for a new coach for the Black Stars after Milovan Rajevac was sacked following their dismal first-round exit at the 2021 Africa Cup of Nations in Cameroon in January.
Rohr, on his part, was fired by the Nigeria Football Federation just before the AFCON, after the Super Eagles’ stuttering World Cup qualifying campaign.
Despite a home defeat to Central African Republic, Rohr steered Nigeria to the playoffs, where they will face Ghana in March for one of Africa’s five Qatar 2022 World Cup tickets.
Ghanaweb.com quoted a source on Thursday night as saying the GFA is seriously considering Rohr, who was in charge of the Super Eagles for five years.
The Ghana FA is reportedly impressed by Rohr’s ‘deep knowledge’ of West African football as he has also worked with Niger Republic and Burkina Faso.
The reports in Ghana also claim that Rohr, 68, is open to working with the Black Stars as he believes ‘Ghanaian football has great potential’.
The World Cup playoffs between the Super Eagles and the Black Stars is scheduled for late March, with Ghana hosting the first leg.
While the Super Eagles have attended the last three World Cups and six overall, the Black Stars missed out on the 2018 edition in Russia and have been to three.
