NPFL: Rivers, Remo stay unbeaten as 3SC spank Heartland, Enyimba, Rangers fall

RIVERS United and Remo Stars retained their unbeaten starts to the Nigeria Professional Football League on Wednesday with a home win and away draw respectively.

Both sides are the only two left without defeat in the league after 10 rounds of fixtures.

Rivers United overtook Remo Stars to the top of the table with a 2-1 victory over Dakkada in Port Harcourt.

League top scorer Ishaq Rafiu scored twice, one in each half, to give the Pride of Rivers the battling win, the second goal coming after Emmanuel Ayaosi’s 45th minute equaliser for the visitors.

In Kaduna, Remo Stars resiliently held off Kano Pillars to escape with a point in a 0-0 draw.

Promoted Remo Stars are second in the table with 20 points, two behind leaders Rivers United.

The biggest win of the evening was in Ibadan where Shooting Stars Sports Club continued their resurgence with a 4-0 spanking of struggling Heartland of Owerri.

After a goalless first half, 3SC came alive in the second period, scoring through Daniel Kolawole, Taofeeq Malomo, Ayo Adejubu and Nafiu Raheem.

The victory, the second in a row for 3SC, propelled the Oluyole Warriors to sixth spot with 15 points from 10 games, while Heartland remain second from bottom with seven points.

Enyimba’s inconsistent form continued on Wednesday with a 2-1 defeat at Nasarawa United.

The Aba Elephant took the lead in the 13th minute when the deadly Victor Mbaoma struck, but the hosts responded almost instantly, Tolulope Oluwole equalising five minutes later.

Mohammed Shammasu bagged a last-gasp winner in the third minute of injury time to condemn Finidi George’s side to their fourth defeat in 10 matches.

Nasarawa United are 10th in the NPFL table with 15 points, one point and four places behind Enyimba.

Another South Eastern side, Enugu Rangers, fell 1-0 at home to Plateau United, with Buhari Ibrahim netting the only goal in the fifth minute.

With the result, Plateau United leapfrogged Rangers to third place with 18 points, while the Enugu side are fourth with two points fewer.

In other NPFL clashes on Wednesday, Sunshine Stars lost 1-0 at Katsina United, Niger Tornadoes held Lobi Stars to a 1-1 draw, the same result between Akwa United and Kwara United in Uyo.
