GHANA have named two coaches with experience in working with European clubs to lead the Black Stars to the Qatar 2022 World Cup playoffs against Nigeria.

The Ghana Football Association on Wednesday night appointed former Newcastle United manager Chris Hughton as technical advisor to Borussia Dortmund assistant coach and new interim Black Stars manager Otto Addo.

The two men will be in charge when the Black Stars face the Super Eagles in late March for a spot at the 2022 World Cup.

Other members of the caretaker technical crew include Aston Villa U-23 coach George Boateng and former Nordsjaelland youth coach Mas-Ud Didi Dramani.

“Former Newcastle United and Brighton & Hove Albion manager Chris Hughton has been appointed as Technical Advisor to the newly constituted Black Stars technical team led by Otto Addo,” the GFA announced on their official website on Wednesday night.

“Other members of the new technical team include George Boateng and Mas-Ud Didi Dramani. The 63-year-old will provide technical advice to the three-man team for next month’s FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022 play-off match against Nigeria.

“The Executive Council of the Ghana Football Association took the decision at a meeting held in Accra on Wednesday, February 9, 2022.

“The four-man team has been put together to take charge of the two matches against rivals Nigeria.”

Ghana fired Milovan Rajevac in January after a disastrous outing at the Africa Cup of Nations where they crashed out in the group phase without winning a single match.

The Black Stars were humiliated at the tournament in Cameroon as they suffered an embarrassing defeat to newcomers Comoros and finished with just one point from three group games.

Irishman Hughton and former Black Stars player Addo were the frontrunners to replace Rajevac before the GFA decided to appoint both men.

Former Ireland international Hughton, 58, is vastly experienced having been interim manager for Tottenham Hotspur and manager at Norwich City, Brighton, Newcastle United and Nottingham Forest, his last job from which he was fired in 2021.

“Otto Addo, a former Ghana player is currently the Assistant Coach of German Bundesliga club Borussia Dortmund – he boasts about 13 years of coaching experience that dates back to 2009 when he first took up the job of an assistant coach at Hamburger SV,” the GFA explained.

“The 46-year-old previously worked as a scout for the Black Stars in 2013 prior to the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil and the 2015 Africa Cup of Nations in Equatorial Guinea.”

The Black Stars are scheduled to host the Super Eagles at the Cape Coast Stadium on 24 March before travelling to Nigeria for the second leg at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja three days later.
