IN the Indian state of Karnataka, a controversy over Muslim women wearing headscarves (Hijab) in schools has erupted, with protests both for and against the ban taking place in towns around the country.
The Karnataka government closed high schools and colleges in the region, after some student protests turned violent,
Girls at a pre-university college in Karnataka’s Udupi district were the ones that started protesting over the hijab restriction: which allows students to wear the hijab on campus but not in class.
Some Hindu students at the schools (for the banning of the hijab) however believe that the school uniform was initially given to students with the aim of making everyone equal, emphasizing that there is no need whatsoever to wear an hijab in the classroom since they can still wear it in college.
