MOSCOW stated yesterday, that in the midst of escalating tensions over Ukraine, a Russian anti-submarine destroyer chased off a US submarine near the Kuril Islands, forcing it to leave the country’s territorial waters.
The account was, however, disputed by the US military.
According to Russia’s defense ministry, the Marshal Shaposhnikov destroyer discovered a US Navy Virginia-class submarine in Russian territorial seas near the Kuril Islands in the northern Pacific.
The ministry did not give any details. They however revealed that the crew of the frigate “used appropriate means” when the submarine refused to surface, and the US submarine left at full speed.
It also revealed that the US defense attaché in Moscow has been summoned.
“In connection with the violation by the US Navy submarine of the state border of the Russian Federation, the defense attache at the US embassy in Moscow was summoned to the Russian defense ministry”, the Russian defense ministry said.
The US military while giving a statement stated that “there is no truth to the Russian claims of our operations in their territorial waters.”
The US Indo-Pacific Command’s spokesperson, Captain Kyle Raines, refused to comment on the actual locations of US submarines.
“We do fly, sail, and operate safely in international waters.” he stated.
