ESE Brune has won Nigeria’s first medal at the 2022 World Athletics Indoor Championships in Belgrade, Serbia.
The 26-year-old won the women’s long jump silver on Sunday to add to the bronze she won in the same event at the Tokyo Olympics last August.
She thus became the third Nigerian athlete to claim medals at the Olympics, World Athletics Championships and the World Athletics Indoor Championships.
Brume leapt to a personal season’s best of 6.85 metres to finish second behind Serbia’s Ivana Valueta, who won the gold medal with a 7.08m leap. Lorraine Ugen of Great Britain claimed the bronze medal with a personal season’s best of 6.82m.
Brume has joined Glory Alozie and the late Sunday Bada as the only Nigerian athletes who have won medals at the three major global events.
The Delta State indigene also became the third Nigerian long jumper after Paul Emordi (silver in 1987) and Chioma Ajunwa (silver in 1997) to win medals in the history of the World Athletics Imdoor Championships.
