MANCHESTER City returned to the top of the Premier League table on Saturday after a 2-0 win at Burnley.
Pep Guardiola’s side had dropped to second place in the table behind Liverpool after the Reds’ 2-0 win over Watford earlier in the day, but City restored their one-point lead at the summit with the away victory.
Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan struck, both from Raheem Sterling assists, as City cruised to a comfortable victory.
City are the only side yet to drop a single point from a winning position in the Premier League this season, winning all 23 games in which they have led. No side has ever gone through an entire Premier League campaign without dropping points when ahead before, according to Opta statistics.
In one of the biggest shocks of the season, Brentford came from behind to smack Chelsea 4-1 at Stamford Bridge.
Brenford, without their Super Eagles midfielder Frank Onyeka in the squad, fell behind to Antonio Rudiger’s goal at the beginning of a frenetic second half.
They equalised through Vitaly Janelt before taking a shock lead with Christian Eriksen’s first goal since his return to the Premier League.
Janelt made it 3-1 and he became the first player to score two or more goals in a game against Chelsea in all competitions this season.
Yoane Wissa wrapped up the scoring in the 87th minute as Brenford moved 11 points away from the relegation spots.
Chelsea, who are still third in the table, have conceded three or more goals against a newly promoted team in the Premier League at Stamford Bridge for only a second time, previously doing so against West Brom in April 2021 (2-5), with both instances coming under Thomas Tuchel, according to Opta statistics.
In other afternoon kick-offs in the Premier League on Saturday, Ashley Young scored his first-ever own goal in the league as Aston Villa lost 2-1 at Wolverhampton Wanderers, while Leeds United and Southampton played out a 1-1 draw at Elland Road.
