Women’s AFCON draw: Super Falcons to face South Africa again

THE Super Falcons have been drawn against their familiar foes South Africa for the 2022 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations.

The tournament is scheduled for Morocco from 2 July to 23 July, with the semi-finalists qualifying for the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup.

Nine-time champions and holders Nigeria will also compete with Burundi and Botswana in Group C of the tournament, which is having 12 teams for the first time.

The Super Falcons and South Africa’s Banyana Banyana have built a fierce rivalry in recent years, and the two contested the last final of the WAFCON in 2018.

Nigeria triumphed on that occasion, winning the trophy on penalties after full-time ended in a goalless draw. South Africa however had a measure of revenge last year at the Aisha Buhari Invitational Tournament.

Defying home advantage, Banyana Banyana played the Super Falcons off the park last September at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena in Onikan, Lagos, winning 4-2 to claim the inaugural trophy.

The Nigerian ladies have never lost a competitive match to South Africa though, with the Super Falcons also beating Banyana Banyana 2-0 in the WAFCON final in Johannesburg in 2000.

In Group A of the 2022 tournament, hosts Morocco will face Burkina Faso, Senegal and Uganda.

A tough-looking Group B has Cameroon, Tunisia, Zambia and Togo.

The three group winners and runners-up will automatically qualify for the quarter-finals, with the two remaining slot filled by the best third-placed teams.
