ASTON Villa are keen on buying Calvin Bassey from Scottish Premiership side Rangers, according to reports in England.

Super Eagles defender Bassey has been in fine form for Rangers this season, playing a key role as they finished second in the Scottish top flight and reached the UEFA Europa League final.

The Telegraph reported today that Premier League side Villa are preparing a bid for the 23-year-old, who has two years left in his Rangers contract.

Current Villa manager Steven Gerrard was the same man who signed Bassey as a free agent for Rangers in 2020, and the Liverpool legend is plotting a reunion.

Villa are said to be planning on bolstering their left-back options, with Lucas Digne currently their only senior player in that position.

Bassey is also adept at centre-back, a position he has played regularly at Rangers this season.

The 22-year-old Nigeria international has played 48 times for Rangers this season, making six assists.

He made his Super Eagles debut on 25 March as a substitute in the Qatar 2022 World Cup playoffs against Ghana in Kumasi, which ended 0-0.

Bassey started in the return leg in Abuja four days later as the Super Eagles were eliminated from the World Cup on the away goals rule following a 1-1 draw.
