MAURITIUS will take the final place in the Super Eagles’ qualifying group for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations after the country prevailed in an appeal to the Confederation of African Football.
The island nation will join Sierra Leone and Guinea Bissau in Nigeria’s group, with the top two teams qualifying for the AFCON in Cote d’Ivoire.
CAF’s Director of Competitions Samson Adamu informed the Nigeria Football Federation today that Mauritius won a case it filed against Sao Tomé and Príncipe concerning their 2023 Africa Cup of Nations preliminary qualifying fixture.
With the CAF verdict, the schedule now means Nigeria will play Sierra Leone in Abuja on Thursday, 9 June and then travel for the encounter with Mauritius on Monday, 13 June.
Mauritius had filed a protest against São Tomé and Príncipe, who won their preliminary qualifying fixture, insisting that one São Tomé player had tested positive for Covid-19.
The player at the centre of the controversy incidentally played a crucial role by scoring the only goal of the match.
CAF had placed both Mauritius and Sao Tomé and Principe in Nigeria’s group during the draw, pending when the case would be settled.
