FORMER and current players of the Super Eagles Vincent Enyeama, Alex Iwobi and Elderson Echiejile have taken to social media to express their grief at the loss of lives in Owo, Ondo State.

No fewer than 50 worshippers at a church in Owo were murdered by gunmen yesterday in a terror attack that shocked the whole nation and the world.

The Owo massacre is the latest in the spate of killings that have spread across Nigeria in recent years as citizens lament worsening insecurity.

Former Super Eagles goalkeeper and captain Enyeama, who played 101 times for the national team, tweeted his condolences today, while urging the government to provide adequate security.

“No one deserves to die in a place of worship. The government needs to do more to protect the lives and properties of its citizens,” the 39-year-old Africa Cup of Nations winner tweeted.

“Rest in peace to the dead. Healing to the wounded. All my condolences to families that lost their loved ones #owomassacre ##Nigeriableeds.”

Everton forward Iwobi, who is in Abuja with the Eagles preparing for their AFCON qualifiers against Sierra Leone and Sao Tome and Principe, prayed for God’s protection against more killings.

“God… Please guide and protect us,” he tweeted.

Echiejile, who along with Enyeama was in the 2013 Super Eagles squad that won Nigeria’s last African title in South Africa in 2013, also condemned the attack.

“This is really sad, we need to do our best to live in a country we’re all safe in,” the 34-year-old former Monaco left-back wrote on Instagram today in reply to an article describing the Owo massacre.

“May God grant the families the heart to bear their loss. #Godalwayswins.”

The massacre of worshippers in Owo, who included men, women and children, has drawn condemnation across the world, with most Nigerians not satisfied with the government’s response to the escalating insecurity in the country.
