Super Eagles slip in FIFA ranking, mixed fortunes for AFCON qualifiers opponents

THE Super Eagles have dropped one spot in the latest FIFA ranking released today.

The Nigerian side are now 31st in the world and fourth in Africa, one place lower than their positions in both sections at the time of the last ranking in March.

The team, who lost two friendlies to Mexico and Ecuador but defeated Sierra Leone and Sao Tome during the period under review, however marginally gained ranking points, going from 1504.1 to 1504.7.

Senegal (18th in the world) and Morocco (22nd) are the top two teams in Africa, followed by Tunisia (30th) who have replaced Nigeria in the continent’s third spot. Cameroon (38th) complete Africa’s top five.

The Super Eagles are the only team in Africa’s top five not going to the World Cup.

Ghana, Africa’s fifth representatives who incidentally eliminated Nigeria, are 11th on the continent and 60th in the world.

Sierra Leone, the second highest-ranked team in Nigeria’s 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying group, dropped from 108th in the world and 24th in Africa to 113th and 25th respectively.

Guinea-Bissau, the next highest, stayed 115th in the world but rose one spot in Africa from 27th to 26th.

Sao Tome and Principe, who were thrashed 10-0 in a record win for the Super Eagles on June 13, retained their 50th spot in Africa but fell from 183rd to 187th globally.

Brazil, Belgium, Argentina, France and England are the top five teams n the world.
