Osimhen would succeed as Lewandowski’s replacement at Bayern — Rohr

FORMER Super Eagles head coach Gernot Rohr has advised Bayern Munich to go for Victor Osimhen if Robert Lewandowski gets his wish to leave the club.

Lewandowski has been Bayern Munich’s top scorer for the past few seasons but he has been trying to force a move to Barcelona this summer, with one year left on his contract.

Bayern Munich are adamant Lewandowski, 33, would have to see out his contract and play for them next season, but Rohr is suggesting they should let him go.

Rohr, 69, who started his career at Bayern Munich and played for them between 1972 and 1974, believes Super Eagles and Napoli striker Osimhen can effectively take over from Lewandowski.

“If Bayern let Robert Lewandowski go, Victor Osimhen would be a good alternative,” Rohr told Sport Bild over the weekend.

“I think he would succeed in Munich.”

Osimhen, who has scored 28 goals for Napoli in 62 appearances over the last two seasons, began his professional club career at Bundesliga side Wolfsburg in 2016, playing 14 times for the senior team in two years.

Rohr is confident the 23-year-old Nigeria international’s spell in Germany would come in handy if he links up with Bayern.

“Since he already has experience in the Bundesliga and speaks a bit of German, his integration period would of course be shorter than with other players from abroad,” Rohr explained.

“If Victor continues to develop, he can become a world class striker. He still needs to improve a few things, like working on his body language. If something doesn’t work out, he shows it too much on the pitch. But these are small things, he can improve them.”

Osimhen has indeed attracted interest from several European giants after scoring 14 Serie A goals last season as Napoli finished third.
