PARIS Saint-Germain have parted ways with Mauricio Pochettino and named Christopi Galtier as his replacement.
Pochettino, who spent 18 months at the French moneybags after replacing Thomas Tuchel, was sacked today, less than two months after leading them to regain the Ligue 1 title.
“Paris Saint-Germain confirm that Mauricio Pochettino has ended his role at the Club,” PSG tweeted today.
“The Club would like to thank Mauricio Pochettino and his staff for their work and wish them the best for the future.”
Pochettino, who steered Tottenham Hotspur to their first-ever UEFA Champions League final in 2019, was unable to get PSG beyond the continental competition’s round of 16 last season, which ultimately led to his sacking.
Moments after Pochettino’s departure was announced, PSG confirmed the appointment of the Argentinian’s replacement.
“Paris Saint-Germain is delighted to announce that Christophe Galtier has been appointed as first team head coach. The Frenchman has signed a contract for two seasons until 30th June 2024,” the club stated on their official website.
“The 55-year-old former defender has become one of the most recognised and experienced coaches in French football.
After his playing career came to an end, Christophe Galtier embarked on a successful coaching career, first as assistant then head coach of Saint-Étienne (2009-2017), before joining Lille (2017-2021) and then Nice (2021-2022).”
Galtier led Lille to finish as Ligue 1 runners-up in 2019 and secured them the league title in 2021, their first since 2011.
“I am delighted to join Paris Saint-Germain, I would like to thank the chairman Nasser Al-Khelaïfi, Luis Campos and the club for their confidence in me,” Gatlier said.
“I am fully aware of the responsibilities involved to coach this extraordinary team, which is one of the most competitive and spectacular squads in Europe.
“I am delighted to work with all of these talented players as well as the top-level staff here at the club. We acknowledge everything that Paris Saint-Germain represents in French and international football.
“My focus is on ambition, hard work and making the most of the team’s potential. I am delighted to become head coach of this team and to be on the bench at the magnificent Parc des Princes, a stadium that embodies a passion for football.”
