IN-form sprint hurdler Tobi Amusan and Tokyo Olympics medallist Ese Brume are the leading medal prospects included in Nigeria’s team to the 2022 World Athletics Championships billed for Oregon, United States of America.
The biggest athletics competition outside the Olympics will be held from July 15 to July 24, with the world’s best athletes participating.
Amusan set a new African record of 12.41 seconds in the women’s 100m hurdles last month in a Diamond League race and is gunning for her first global medal after coming close at both the last World Athletics Championships in Doha, Qatar in 2019 and the Olympics last year.
She finished fourth in the finals of both competitions, missing the bronze medals by inches.
One her own part, Brume will be hoping to win a higher-value medal in Oregon after her bronze feats at the 2019 Worlds in Doha and the Olympics in Tokyo last year.
Among the other medal prospects in the Nigerian team to Oregon are US-based teenage sensation Favour Ofili, who will race in the women’s 100m and 200m, Favour Ashe in the men’s sprints, and the mixed 4x400m relay team made up of Patience Okon-George, Knowledge Omovoh, Dubem Amene, Samson Nathaniel and Sikiru Adeyemi.
Nigeria will also be represented in the men’s 4x100m relay by Ashe, Raymond Ekevwo, Godson Brume and Ushoritse Itsekiri.
In field events, apart from Brume in women’s long jump, Team Nigeria will have Chukwuebuka Enekwechi in men’s shot put, Sade Olatoye in women’s hammer throw, Chioma Onyekwere in women’s discus and Ruth Usoro in women’s long jump and triple jump.
In all, 21 athletes will represent Nigeria at the World Athletics Championships in Oregon.
