Nigeria’s raves of the moment in sports, Tobi Amusan and Ese Brume, have joined their colleagues in Birmingham for the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

The two made history at the recently concluded Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships and are also expected to post impressive performances and win medals at Birmingham 2022.

While Amusan broke the women’s 100 metres world record with 12.12 seconds and won the gold medal, Brume won the women’s long jump silver medal, her third straight global medal.

Amusan became the first Nigerian ever to win a World Athletics Championships gold and set a world record, and Brume became the first long jumper from the country to win medals at the Olympics, World Athletics Championships and the Commonwealth Games.

The pair arrived at the camp of Team Nigeria in Birmingham today to the applause of their compatriots.

Amusan and Brume athletes stepped into the Games Village camp to a rousing welcome by officials and athletes who were apparently inspired by their record-breaking feats.

The two World Athletics Championships medallists are favourites to win gold in their different events as they did at the last Commonwealth Games in Gold Coast, Australia four years ago.

Athletics experts and coaches in the Team Nigeria camp believe the positive energy and momentum of both Amusan and Brume will boost the confidence of the other athletes in camp.

Team Nigeria at Birmingham 2022 is made up of 94 athletes who will compete in nine sports, including athletics, boxing, table tennis, weightlifting and wrestling.
