Sports minister Sunday Dare yesterday received Tobi Amusan for the first since she made history for Nigeria at the World Athletics Championship in Oregon, United States of America.
Amusan became the first Nigerian to set a world record in athletics with her 12.12 seconds run in the 100 metres hurdles semi-finals at the competition.
She also made history as the first Nigerian to win a World Athletics Championships gold medal when she ran a wind-assisted 12.06s to win the final race in the early hours of Monday.
Dare once again expressed his delight with Amusan’s achievements, reminding her that she has written her name boldly in history.
“You have made Nigerians happy and the country stands firmly behind you and other athletes too,” the minister said.
“Thank you for your brilliant performance and for displaying the Nigerian spirit.”
Dare urged Amusan and the other Nigerian athletes to remain focused on the task at hand in the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Team Nigeria will begin their quest from medals in the track and field event of the Commonwealth Games from Monday.
The Games began on Thursday night with a spectacular opening ceremony and will end on August 8.
