Mohamed Salah scored on the opening matchday of the Premier League campaign for the sixth straight season as Liverpool battled back to hold Fulham to a 2-2 draw at Craven Cottage in today’s early kick-off.
The Egypt forward scored Liverpool’s second equaliser with 10 minutes left to extend his record for scoring in the opening game of a Premier League season: he is the only player to net on matchday one now six years in a row.
Salah also joins Wayne Rooney, Alan Shearer and Frank Lampard as the players with the most Premier League goals (eight) on the opening day of the season.
In the thrilling encounter, new Liverpool signing Darwin Nunez came off the bench to score one and create another to earn his side a point against the promoted side.
Aleksandar Mitrovic, top scorer in the Championship last season as Fulham gained promotion, scored twice for the London club in their first game back in the top flight.
He gave Fulham the lead in the 32nd minute, outmuscling Trent Alexander-Arnold to head home a superb cross by Kenny Tete.
Luis Diaz had a goal ruled out for offside before Fulham’s goal then curled a shot against the post after the hosts had taken the lead.
Substitute Nunez then marked his Premier League debut by equalising with a close-range effort in the 64th minute, off Salah’s assist.
But Fulham were back in front eight minutes later, Mitrovic restoring Fulham’s lead from the penalty spot after he was fouled by Virgil van Dijk.
With the spot kick conceded, Liverpool ended a run of 51 Premier League matches without giving away a penalty, which was the longest ongoing run in the competition.
Van Dijk also conceded a penalty in the competition for the first time since October 2018 against Manchester City, according to Opta statistics.
Mitrovic picked himself up to convert past Alisson from the spot before Salah equalised from close range after a pass by Nunez.
