The Nigeria Football Federation executive committee has directed its technical sub-committee to review Super Falcons head coach Randy Waldrum’s recent performances and make recommendations about his suitability concerning the job.

The American coach led the nine-time champions to their joint-worst WAFCON performance in history in July when they finished fourth in Morocco.

It was only the second time since the tournament began in 1998 that the Super Falcons would not win at least a bronze medal, although they secured a ticket to the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand as one of Africa’s four guaranteed qualifiers.

Following the WAFCON disappointment, the NFF is looking into the possibility of replacing Waldrum before the World Cup, so that a more competent head coach can take charge at the global tournament.

The decision to assess Waldrum’s competence was taken at the Annual General Assembly of the NFF in Lagos yesterday.

As part of the communique issued at the end of the meeting late last night, the NFF Executive Committee ordered the technical committee to ‘evaluate’ Waldrum, who was appointed in October 2020.

“Following a detailed presentation by the Head of Delegation of Nigeria team to the 12th Women Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco, the Executive Committee directed its Technical and Development Sub-Committee to hold a meeting and make recommendations on the way forward for the Senior Women National Team, Super Falcons, including but not limited to a thorough evaluation of the capability of the coaching crew to lead the team to a creditable performance at the FIFA World Cup finals in Australia and New Zealand next year,” the communique reads in part.

The Super Falcons have struggled under Waldrum’s guidance, failing to impress at the Aisha Buhari Invitational Women’s Tournament in Lagos last year before the near-disastrous outing in Morocco.
