Harry Maguire apologises after horror show vs Germany

Harry Maguire has expressed his regrets after he played a part in two of Germany’s goals against his England team in a UEFA Nations League clash at Wembley Stadium last night.

The two struggling European giants played out a thrilling 3-3 draw last night to close out their poor campaigns in the competition.

The Manchester United defender was directly culpable for Germany’s first goal and had a hand in their second before England fought back to lead 3-2.

Goalkeeper Nick Pope then gifted the Germans the equaliser late in the contest.

Maguire’s first costly error was bringing down Jamal Musiala in the box after having given the ball away cheaply to the German forward.

The penalty that was awarded for the foul was smartly converted by Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The Manchester United captain was then robbed of the ball high up in Germany territory, and the counter-attack led to Kai Havertz curling in a superb goal to make it 2-0.

Maguire’s mistakes were temporarily forgotten as England engineered a turnaround, taking a 3-2 lead courtesy of three goals in 11 minutes through Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Harry Kane.

But a late strike by Havertz off Pope’s blunder meant already relegated England were denied their first win of the group.

Maguire then took to social media today to admit his mistakes, while also praising his teammates for the response to going 2-0 down.

“Mistakes are part of the game, I apologise,” he wrote on Instagram. “Great fightback and spirit to get us back into the game by the lads.

“Take the positives and look forward to Qatar. The tough times will make us stronger.”

Error-prone Maguire has been reduced to the role of a bench warmer at Manchester United under Erik ten Hag this season and there have been calls that he should be dropped from England’s squad to the Qatar 2022 World Cup in November and December.
