Rivers United out of CAF Champions League after Wydad thrashing

Rivers United have been sent packing from the CAF Champions League after an embarrassing 6-0 defeat to Wydad Athletic Club in Casablanca, Morocco tonight.

The Nigeria Professional Football League champions were knocked out of Africa’s elite club competition 7-2 on aggregate, having won the first leg 2-1 in Port Harcourt last week.

The defending champions of the competition began the rout tonight in the 33rd minute when Ayoub El Amloud netted the opening goal.

Rivers United’s job was made a lot harder in the 37th minute when goalkeeper Seidu Mutawakilu was sent off and a penalty awarded to Wydad.

Yahya Jabrane converted the spot kick and it was uphill from there for Rivers United.

Defending against the African champions with 11 men was hard enough, it was almost impossible with 10, and Wydad took ruthless advantage.

The Moroccans scored four more times after the interval to complete the humiliation of the Nigerian side.

Rivers United join Plateau United in dropping down to the CAF Confederation Cup, where they will seek to get to the group stages through the playoffs.

Plateau United were eliminated from the Champions League last night by Tunisian giants on the away goals rule after the tie ended 2-2 on aggregate.
