THE speaker of the State House of Assembly, Funminiyi Afuye, has passed away.
According to sources, he died today (evening) at an unnamed hospital after being brought there for a brief illness.
Afuye, a lawyer who served as the Assembly’s representative for Ikere Constituency 1, passed away at age 66.
According to a House member who verified his death over the phone, he was brought to the hospital in the morning after becoming ill.
The politician, who described the Speaker’s death as surprising, stated that after hearing the news, he immediately raced to the hospital but had to turn around when he encountered others who were in tears.
He mentioned that Afuye was at the Thanksgiving Service of the new governor, Biodun Oyebanji, on Tuesday and even chaired the plenary session of the Assembly later that afternoon.
The lawmaker said, “This is shocking. Rt Hon Funminiyi Afuye was at the House of Assembly on Tuesday, October 18, 2022, so his death is devastating to us. It is a rude shock.
“We learnt he developed sudden complications in the morning (Wednesday) and was rushed to the hospital where he died.
Afuye, a former state commissioner, served in the Assembly from 2007 to 2011. He was currently serving out the remainder of his second term, which is set to end in June of next year.
