Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has been punished for his untoward behaviour towards match officials during a Premier League game.
The German was sent off during Liverpool’s 1-0 win over Manchester City at Anfield on October 16 after he advanced menacingly towards the assistant referee, invading his personal space and shouting in his face.
Klopp has been fined £30,000 by the Football Association following the incident, it was announced today.
Klopp was given a red card after berating the official when a foul was not given for a challenge on Mohamed Salah.
He apologised for his reaction in his post-match comments but the FA went ahead to charge him.
“Something snapped in that situation, I’m not proud of that. I deserved a red card,” Klopp admitted.
Klopp had been charged with a breach of FA rule E3, which covers “comments which are improper, which bring the game into disrepute, which are threatening, abusive, indecent or insulting”.
The FA said Klopp accepted that his behaviour “was improper”, and “an independent Regulatory Commission imposed his sanction during a hearing”.
Liverpool can appeal against the sanction if they feel it is unfair.
