Victor Osimhen is now the top Nigerian scorer in Serie A history after his goal in Napoli’s 2-1 victory at Atalanta tonight.
The Super Eagles striker netted once and set up the other goal to give Napoli a battling victory over their hosts, for whom Ademola Lookman scored.
Osimhen has now scored 32 goals in Serie A, one more that Simeon ‘Simy’ Nwankwo, who was previously the top-scoring Nigerian in the Italian top flight.
Simy got his 31 goals from 101 appearances, while Osimhen’s 32 have come from 60 Serie A games.
Before Osimhen struck tonight, he was heavily involved in Napoli conceding the opening goal.
Atalanta were awarded a penalty after Osimhen was adjudged to have handled the ball in the Napoli box, and his Super Eagles teammate Lookman stepped up to convert by hitting the roof of the net from the spot.
The 19th minute goal stung league leaders Napoli into action and they responded four minutes later, with Osimhen atoning for the penalty with a glancing header that drew his side level.
The 23-year-old was involved 12 minutes later as he held off Atalanta defenders to set up Eljif Elmas for Napoli’s second goal, which turned out to be the winner.
There were no more goals in the game as Napoli stretched their lead over second-placed Atalanta to eight points.
Osimhen lasted 15 minutes in the game while Lookman was taken off with nine minutes of normal time left on the clock.
Osimhen is now also Serie A’s top scorer for this season with eight goals and two assists, while Lookman is not far behind with six goals and three assists.
