Sadio Mane will not play for Senegal at the Qatar 2022 World Cup, the country’s football federation has announced.
The Bayern Munich forward will miss the global showpiece due to a leg injury he sustained while playing for his club.
The 30-year-old picked up an injury to his right fibula in Bayern Munich’s 6-1 Bundesliga win over Werder Bremen last Tuesday.
Despite the injury, Senegal were hopeful and Mane was named in their 26-man squad for the World Cup.
However, after latest tests, it has been discovered that the former Liverpool forward will not recover in time to feature for the Teranga Lions in Qatar.
Mane is Senegal’s most important player and his absence is a massive blow for the African champions.
They are in Group A in Qatar, along with The Netherlands, Ecuador and hosts Qatar.
Senegal begin their campaign against The Netherlands on Monday, the day after the tournament’s opening match between Qatar and Ecuador.
