Tunisia were held to a 0-0 draw by Denmark in the Qatar 2022 Group D opener today at the Education Stadium in Al Rayyan.

The Carthage Lions were seeking to become the first African team to win a game in Qatar after Senegal’s 2-0 defeat to The Netherlands yesterday.

Despite fielding many Premier League stars, the Danes were given a tough contest by the North Africans, who were the first African team to win a World Cup fixture in 1978.

Both sides had goals ruled out for offside, while Denmark’s Andreas Cornelius missed the best chance of the encounter from a yard out.

There was late drama in the fifth minute of injury time when referee Cesar Ramos consulted the Video Assistant Referee before sticking with his original decision not to award a penalty to Denmark for handball.

Tunisia have a tough route if they are to advance beyond the group phase for the first time ever, as they have Australia and defending champions France in the group.

The other African teams in the tournament are Morocco, who face 2018 runners-up Croatia tomorrow, as well as Ghana and Cameroon, who battle Portugal and Switzerland respectively on Thursday.
