NEDC spends N75b on 647 projects in 2 years

THE North East Development Commission (NEDC) reported spending N75,098,550,001 to construct 647 infrastructure projects in the region’s health, education, and other sectors.

Other initiatives were listed to address the housing, agriculture, power, water supply, sanitation, and hygiene (WASH), as well as other economic sectors.

Unveiling the completion of the projects during a parley with media executives in Maiduguri yesterday, the Managing Director of the commission, Mohammed Alkali, revealed that 2,500 houses built in five states of the region had gulped N17.5 billion.

He noted that 1,000 housing units in the Ngowom village were erected with a total of N2.92 billion.

The MD stated that although the Mayo Ndaga Bridge in Taraba State ate up N202 million, three bridges at Kudzum, Dilechim, and Wuro-Ngayandi in Adamawa State also cost N1.43 billion.

He said, “The 54km Mutai-Ngalda Road in Yobe State costs N12.199 billion; Alkaleri-Futuk Road – N2.83 billion; 53km Gombe Abba-Kirfi Road in Bauchi and Gombe also cost N11.697 billion”

“Also, 22.5km Zabarmari-Ngowom Road in Borno State was constructed a the cost of N13.553 billion; 32km Dabna-Garkida Road in Adamawa State at N6.269 billion; 2.5km Road at Adamawa State College of Education, Hong – N498.55 million while Jabbi Lamba-Belel Transborder Road, also in Adamawa State gulped N1.192 billion”.

He explained that the completed projects were in the first phase of the Master Plan for the recovery and stabilisation of six insurgency affected states.

According to him, the first phase’s strategic initiatives were concentrated on fostering global peace in order to stop the resurgence of insurgency and other conflicts in the area.

“On the completion of environmental and ecological projects, he said, “The commission engaged 300 youths and women in waste recycling, efficient stove production and use to become self-reliant.”

He continued by saying that they had also received environmental education and mitigation of climate change.
