Enyimba and 3SC have won their opening games of the Dozy Mmobuosi Super Cup, a pre-season tournament for the Nigeria Professional Football League.
Shooting Stars Sports Club (3SC) of Ibadan began the competition with a 3-0 bashing of Bendel Insurance of Benin yesterday, while Enyimba of Aba followed up with a 1-0 victory over South Eastern rivals Rangers of Enugu.
Enyimba secured a hard-fought win over Rangers at the Remo Stars Stadium, Ikenne through Elijah Akanni, who scored the only goal of the encounter between two of the country’s traditional heavyweights.
The substitute fired in a low shot 18 minutes from time after another substitute, Nonso Nzediegwu, set him up in the box.
Chijioke Mbaoma came close to increasing Enyimba’s lead late on but he hit the post, while goalkeeper Olorunleke Ojo had to tip Christian Nnaji’s shot over to preserve the win.
In the opening match, 3SC dismissed Bendel Insurance, who secured promotion to the NPFL at the end of last season.
Anthony Okachi set the Oluyole Warriors on their way with the opening goal in the 25th minute before Taofeek Malomo and Samuel Ayanrinde added two late goals.
The competition continues today with Enyimba facing Bendel Insurance as 3SC battle Rangers.
