France came back from 2-0 to 2-2 in regulation time and equalised again in extra-time after Argentina regained their lead to take the final score to 3-3 before penalties.
Kylian Mbappe scored a hat-trick for France while Lionel Messi netted twice for Argentina.
Argentina have won their third World Cup, their first since 1986.
