WILFRED Ndidi and Kelechi Iheanacho were involved tonight as Leicester City were knocked out of the Carabao Cup at the quarter-final stage by Newcastle United.

The match ended 2-0, with Manchester United defeating Charlton Athletic 3-0 in the other fixture tonight at Old Trafford.

At St James’s Park, Newcastle United underlined their superiority over Leicester City with a 2-0 win, just two weeks after beating the same opponents 3-0 in a Premier League clash at the King Power Stadium.

Ndidi started and completed tonight’s fixture while his fellow Nigeria international Iheanacho was a second-half substitute.

Dan Burn and Joelinton struck in the second half to send the Magpies to their first major semi-final in 20 years.

Newcastle, who are third in the Premier League and in the hunt for a first major trophy in more than 50 years, dominated the encounter and missed several chances before Burn fired home from inside the box on the hour mark for his first goal for the team he has supported all his life.

Joelinton, who set up that goal, then coolly netted from Miguel Almiron’s pass 12 minutes later to wrap up the victory.

Substitute Jamie Vardy missed two chances to get Leicester back into the game but Newcastle fully deserved their win.

At Old Trafford, in-form Marcus Rashford came off the bench to score two late goals as United fended off third-tier Charlton, who were causing problems in an impressive second half performance.

Antony gave United the lead with a spectacular strike in the 21st minute but Charlton stayed in the contest until Rashford intervened with two goals in the 90th minute and fourth minute of stoppage time.

Rashford, who has 15 goals to his name this season, has now scored in eight consecutive home games for Manchester United, becoming the first player to do so since Wayne Rooney in March 2010.

Manchester United have won eight consecutive home games in all competitions so far this season, the club’s longest home winning run since December 2017.
