NPFL: Insurance maintain perfect start, Akwa stun Nasarawa as Enyimba slip up

BENDEL Insurance kept up their impressive 100 percent start to the Nigeria Premier Football League season with a 1-0 win over Kwara United at the Lekan Salami Stadium in Ibadan today.

The newly promoted Benin City side have now won all three of their fixtures in the top flight this term, taking them to the top of the standings in Group A.

Imade Osarenkhoe struck in the 25th minute at Kwara United’s temporary home to give Insurance their second win on the road.

Also today, Akwa United secured their first victory of the campaign with a stunning 3-0 drubbing of their hosts Nasarawa United.

James Ajako got the Uyo side on their way two minutes before half-time, while Ndifreke Effiong added a brace in the 47th and 74th minutes to condemn Nasarawa United to a third consecutive defeat.

In Jos, Enyimba fell to their first defeat of the season after taking the lead against their hosts Plateau United.

The People’s Elephant drew first blood through Chibuike Nwaiwu in the 25th minute but Plateau United equalised 11 minutes later with Ifeanyi Emmanuel’s strike.

The hosts left it very late before claiming their first victory of the season, Kazeem Ogunleye scoring in the sixth minute of added time.

In Group B, Enugu Rangers earned their first point of the season with a 1-1 draw at their temporary home in Awka against Sunshine Stars.

Ikemdinachi Imo scored into his own net to give Rangers the lead in the 14th minute but Ibrahim Yusuf equalised for the visitors in the 36th minute as the Akure side played their third draw in a row.

Group B leaders Abia Warriors were brought back down to earth after back-to-back wins as they were beaten 1-0 at home by Lobi Stars, who are level on six points from three games.

Bayelsa United edged past Wikki Tourists 2-1 and Doma United beat Dakkada FC 1-0 in the other games of Group B today.
