THE only importer of petrol, Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) Limited, has been requested by the House of Representatives to reduce filling station queues immediately.
The House urged the appropriate security authorities today to find oil marketers and other potential economic saboteurs who are behind the nation’s fuel shortage.
These decisions were made as a result of a legislator, Leke Abejide, calling attention to the ongoing fuel crisis in the entire nation in a motion of urgent public significance.
The green chamber ordered the pertinent House committees to look into the matter and deliver a report on it within 48 hours while the regulatory authority is required to meet with the House leadership.
Meanwhile a bill to alter the Fire Service Act’s provisions and include provisions for the establishment of building safety standards, regulations, and penalties for noncompliance has advanced to second reading in the house of representatives.
The bill which was sponsored by a member, Unyime Idem, seeks to address fire outbreaks in Nigeria, calls for either a fine of no more than one million naira or a period of no more than five months in jail, or both, for violators.
Another clause in the law states that the building permit cannot be granted until the submitted building plan has been carefully reviewed, the required fire services prevention and management kits have been provided, and the appropriate supervision procedures have been followed.
