THE spokesperson of State Police Command, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, has clarified the reports about the attack on Ogijo Divisional Police headquarters, Ikorodu.
Some men wearing the Nigerian Army uniform on Wednesday, February 15, attacked and set ablaze the police station in retaliatory attack.
The supposedly army officers without name tags stormed and attacked the police station in Ikorodu but under the Ogun State command in response to an alleged assault on a soldier by a police officers and set it on fire.
According to a source in the area, the soldiers from the 174 Battalion Odugunyan base in Ikorodu, Lagos, were seeking revenge for an assault on their colleague by a mobile police officer during earlier altercation between the duo.
The source said the MOPOL reportedly stabbed the soldier in the chest with a knife during the altercation, and took refuge at the Ogijo police station, a development that anger the soldier, who returned to base and call for revenge with his colleagues.
The source further revealed that many people including few police officers were reportedly injured during the attack, adding that throughout the duration of the attack, the area was filled with panicky, as bystanders flee for safety.
“Our station is under heavy attack by soldiers from the 174 Battalion Odogunyan of the Nigerian Army. They have set fire to the station following a dispute between a mobile police officer and a soldier.
“Prior to setting the police station on fire, a soldier and a mobile police officer engaged in physical combat, and the mopol defeated the soldier with leather punches,” the source said.
Responding to questions on the attack on his official Twitter account, Hundeyin, said, “We would like to clarify that the unrest is located in Ogijo, Ogun State, despite its proximity to Ikorodu, Lagos.
“Our officers are on high alert and will not tolerate a breakdown of law and order in Lagos State.”
Meanwhile the military is yet to responded to development.
