GHANAIAN footballer Christian Atsu has unfortunately died in the Turkey earthquake at the age of 31, his agent and manager both confirmed today.

The former Chelsea and Newcastle United forward had been missing since the devastating earthquake hit Turkey and Syria in the early hours of Monday, February 6.

His body has now been discovered and the sad news was confirmed this morning.

Atsu was reported as missing within hours of the earthquake after scoring a last-minute winner for current club Hatayspor in their home game against Turkish Super Lig rivals Kasimpasa on Sunday, February 5.

The Ghana international joined the Turkish side last September and was in the city of Antakya when the 7.8 magnitude earthquake struck.

His agent, Nana Sechere, said: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that I have to announce to all well wishers that sadly Christian Atsu’s body was recovered this morning.

“My deepest condolences go to his family and loved ones. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone for their prayers and support.

“I ask that whilst we make the necessary arrangements, that everyone would please respect the privacy of the family during this very difficult time.”

There had been false hope the day after the earthquake when there were reports that Atsu had been rescued and taken to hospital.

But it was soon denied and the search continued for the football star, with his family and friends joining in the rescue efforts, and his partner and mother of his children appealing for help.
