Athletics: Nigeria’s Ofili, Onwuzurike win big at American Collegiate finals

NIGERIAN youngsters Favour Ofili and Udodi Onwuzurike produced commendable performances at the American National Collegiate Athletics Association (NCAA) Championships over the weekend.

Ofili, 20, won her second women’s 200m indoor silver medal at the NCAA Indoor Championships yesterday.

The Commonwealth Games medallist finished second in 22.20 seconds to reach the podium for her school Louisiana State University.

Julien Alfred won the race with another college record, running a new world lead of 22.01s.

Ofili’s progress was later celebrated by LSU, who tweeted: “Favour Ofili finishes a great indoor season with silver medal!

“@FavOfili entered the year with a PR of 22.46 seconds and finishes it with a new best of 22.11 seconds. #GeauxTigers.”

On his part, Onwuzurike clocked 20.36s to finish second in his section of the men’s 200m final at the NCAA Indoor Championships.

The 20-year-old World Athletics U-20 Championships men’s 200m gold medallist in 2021 finished fifth overall while Tarsis Orogot won his section in 20.20s.
