FORMER Inspector General of Police Solomon Arase (retired) has been sworn in by President Muhammadu Buhari as the new head of the Police Service Commission (PSC).

The new PSC chief took the oath of office before the Federal Executive Council (FEC) meeting today in the council chamber two months after the Senate confirmed him as PSC chairman.

Those present at the inauguration included: Yemi Osinbajo, Boss Mustapha, Secretary to the Government of the Federation, and Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, Chief of Staff to the President, alongside other council members.

Arase, who retired in 2016, served as the 18th indigenous Inspector-General of Police (IGP) between April 2015 and June 2016. He held a number of positions, including that of head of the Criminal Intelligence and Investigation Bureau, the top intelligence-gathering division of the Nigerian police.

Arase promised to prioritize the welfare of the officers and men of the Nigerian Police Force in an interview with State House Correspondents.

Additionally, he promised to deal with the corruption problem and the ongoing problems between the IGP and the PSC.

Five members of the Code of Conduct Bureau’s board (CCB) were also sworn in by the president.

They include Murtala Kankia from Katsina State (North-West); Zephaniah Bulus from Nasarawa State (North Central); Farouk Umar from Yobe State (North East); Taofeek Abdulsalam from Ondo State (South West); and Prof. Juwaria Badamasi from Kogi State (North Central).

Members of the council also observed a moment of silence in memory of Lt. Gen. Oladipo Diya, who passed away on March 26, 2023, on Sunday.

Diya held the positions of Chief of General Staff and Vice Chairman of the Provisional Ruling Council under the rule of Gen. Sani Abacha.

Diya, who was born in Odogbolu, Ogun State, on April 3, 1944, enrolled at the Nigerian Defence Academy in Kaduna and participated in the Nigerian Civil War.

He was appointed Vice Chairman of the Provisional Ruling Council in 1994 and Chief of General Staff in 1993.
