ERLING Haaland struck twice tonight to inspire Manchester City to a 4-1 win over Southampton at St Mary’s Stadium.
The win took the champions to within five points of Premier League leaders Arsenal, who travel to Liverpool tomorrow.
Haaland, who missed City’s win over Liverpool last weekend with a groin injury, took his Premier League tally to a remarkable 30 goals in 27 appearances.
The Norway striker has now scored more goals this season than several Premier League clubs, including Chelsea, and set a record in the process: no player has reached 30 goals in fewer appearances in the history of the Premier League.
After an even start in which the struggling hosts matched City’s energy, Kevin de Bruyne registered his 100th Premier League assist by setting up Haaland to give Pep Guardiola’s side the lead on the stroke of half-time.
Jack Grealish continued his impressive 2023 form as he beat Southampton goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu at the second attempt after being played through by De Bruyne in the 58th minute.
Haaland registered his second goal in spectacular fashion, firing home with a bicycle kick in the 68th minute.
Sekou Mara reduced the deficit in the 72nd minute but substitute Julian Alvarez scored from the penalty spot three minutes later to seal City’s win.
The result was an eighth consecutive win in all competitions for City as they hope to overhaul a relentless Arsenal side gunning for their first Premier League title since 2004.
Southampton, who left Super Eagles midfielder Joe Aribo out of the matchday squad and striker Paul Onuachu on the bench, remain four points adrift of safety at the bottom of the table.
