GUNMEN in the Imota at the Ikorodu region of Lagos State on Thursday killed an Assistant Superintendent of Police who has not yet been identified along the Ikorodu-Ijebu-Ode Road.

According to information obtained by City Round, after committing the crime, the suspects carted away with two rifles as the deceased policeman’s coworkers fled for safety.

According to a source in the area who spoke with newsmen, the gunmen shot at the policemen while they were conducting an operation on the highway.

The source revealed that the attack took place on Thursday around 7.30 p.m, adding that the tense situation impacted traffic on the highway.

The source said, “Yesterday (Thursday), armed men attacked some policemen at a point along the Ikorodu-Ijebu-Ode Road, Imota, and shot a policeman to death.

“We gathered that the policeman that died was an Assistant Superintendent of Police and the gunmen also stole two rifles. The policemen were on the highway when the gunmen attacked them around 7.30pm.”

As of the time this report was filed, newsmen learned that while other police officers who fled the scene had returned to the station, one of the armed officers’ whereabouts remained a mystery.

SP Benjamin Hundeyin, the state police public relations officer, did not return calls or a text message sent to his mobile phone as of the time this report was filed, making attempts to reach him unsuccessful.

Recently, gunmen had been wreaking havoc on Lagos residents, including police officers.

Three persons were killed by gunmen on Wednesday at Gowon Estate in the state’s Ipaja area.

Residents in the area of the Union Bank building on the estate raised the alarm and alerted the police authorities out of concern for their safety during the attack on 41 Road. The police swooped in and quickly restored order in the area.

Additionally, on August 25, 2022, gunmen murdered a police officer working for a new generation bank near the Cassette Bus Stop, Coker Aguda, in the state’s Surulere district.
