KELECHI Iheanacho scored against his former club tonight but it was Erling Haaland who stole the limelight as Manchester City defeated Leicester City 3-1 in their Premier League clash at the Etihad Stadium.

Nigeria international Iheanacho pulled a consolation goal back for Leicester City against his former employers after Haaland had helped the hosts to a commanding 3-0 lead.

Haaland scored twice, from the penalty spot in the 13th minute and off Kelvin De Bruyne’s assist 12 minutes later to take his Premier League tally for the season to 32 goals.

The Norway striker has now equalled the scoring record in a 38-game Premier League season, which Mohamed Salah made in the 2018/2019 season.

With eight games still to play in the campaign, Haaland’s next target will be the all-time record jointly held by Andy Cole and Alan Shearer, who scored 34 goals in 42-game seasons.

Haaland’s brace made it 3-0 to Manchester City, after John Stones scored in the fifth minute to give them an early lead.

Iheanacho came on at the start of the second half to replace Jamie Vardy, and the Super Eagles forward struck in the 75th minute against the club where he began his professional career.

Incidentally, it was the 75th club goal in Iheanacho’s career with Manchester City and Leicester City.

Iheanacho’s international teammate Wilfred Ndidi started the match and lasted 87 minutes before making way for Zambia striker Patson Daka as Leicester chased the game.

The victory took City to within three points of Premier League leaders Arsenal, with both teams having played the same number of games.

Leicester, with new manager Dean Smith in charge, are second from bottom, two points from safety.
