THE National Association of Nigerian Students in Sudan has stated that all remaining students in the war-torn nation of North Africa have been evacuated from Khartoum.
The association’s public relations officer, Amal Pantami, announced this in a statement yesterday.
“This is to inform the general public that all the remaining Nigerian students have been evacuated from Khartoum today Sunday 30th April, 2023,” the statement read.
“There were a total of 26 buses and each bus contained about 50 people.
“We continue to ask for everyone’s prayers and we hope all the students are able to reach Nigeria safely. We’re ever grateful for your continuous support and prayers.”
More than 500 people have died and tens of thousands have fled since fighting started on April 15.
The Federal Government reported yesterday that it had spent $1.2 million on bus fares to transport stranded Nigerians to the Egyptian border before being flown back to their country.
The fighting pits the forces of army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan against his ex-deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo, who commands the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), a heavily armed paramilitary group.
