A family of three is believed to have died after heavy rains in the Denro community in Ogun State’s Ifo Local Government Area.

Information gathered reveals that the rains were followed by a windstorm, which caused a concrete fence beside the victims’ house to collapse on the apartment the family occupied.

Residents reported that the family’s head, locally known as “Onimalu” — a butcher at the local abattoir in the neighborhood — attempted to save his son and pregnant wife, but they all died.

A landlord, who requested anonymity, told newsmen that the tragic incident happened in the early hours of yesterday.

“It happened at night (when) the fence at the upper house fell like a landslide on their own building. It happened that their own building is close to the door at the back,” he stated.

“Officials of the Nigeria Police from the Ajuwon Division were on ground yesterday (Monday). With the intervention of the police, everywhere was calm. They buried them yesterday. The same family – husband, pregnant wife and a child.”

Another local told newsmen that the structure was built on the wrong piece of property, next to a canal.

When reached, Abimbola Oyeyemi, spokesman for the Ogun State Police Command, said he had heard of the event but had yet to obtain accurate details.

He promised to respond after receiving a brief from the Divisional Police Officer of the Ajuwon Divisional Headquarters, but as of the time of submitting this report, he is yet to do so.

Attempts to reach Ibrahim Farinloye, the Zonal Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) in the South-West, for comment were unsuccessful as of press time.

Others who were hurt in the building were reportedly rushed to other hospitals in the vicinity.
