AFRICA Day is tomorrow but mine comes early and begins today. In keeping with the theme of this year’s celebration “Our Africa, Our Future” which encourages us to celebrate Africa’s achievements in commemorating the 60th anniversary of the African Union, I’m beaming my spotlight on an African achiever at 60.
He is a filmmaker, storyteller and writer who has brought to screen some of Africa’s most successful TV drama series. As the pioneer content producer of Tinsel, his work remains one of Nigeria’s longest-running series acclaimed in 2013 as “the most followed and most successful drama on Nigerian television in recent times.”
A voting member of the prestigious Oscars and Emmys Awards, he stands tall as one of the very few distinguished filmmakers on the African continent to have been elected to both the world’s most prestigious Film and TV academies.
He has served as President of the Independent Television Producers Association of Nigeria (ITPAN), a four-time Head Judge for the Africa Magic Viewer’s Choice Awards (AMVCA)(including the latest edition held last weekend), three-time Head Juror of the Uganda Film Festival, Juror of the Johannesburg International Film Festival South Africa, and a Juror/Mentor of the Netflix/UNESCO African Folktales Reimagined project.
Talking about Africa’s future, he has served as the pioneer Academy Director of the Multichoice Talent Factory West Africa (2018-2022) providing priceless training and mentoring opportunities for the next African stars. He is a co-founder/director of the iRepresent International Documentary Film Festival – a festival that has pursued its theme of “Africa in self-conversation” by championing films and stories about Africa.
He received the Film Excellence Award from the Society of the Performing Arts of Nigeria in 2013, and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Nigerian Film Corporation in 2018.
