FG plans first sports university as Dare swears in NIS board

NIGERIA will have a sports university in the coming years, according to sports minister Sunday Dare.

The minister made the disclosure today in Abuja during the swearing-in of members of the new governing board of the National Institute for Sports.

Dare assured that there are plans by the Federal Government to set up the University of Sports in the country, and added that the National Sports Commission could be revived.

He gave further assurances that bills on both projects have passed the third reading at the National Assembly.

The sports minister inaugurated the NIS board before he joined his colleagues for the last Federal Executive Council meeting of the eight-year President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

The new 13-member governing board is headed by Danladi Ibrahim, who is also a member of the Interim Management Committee of the Nigeria Premier Football League.

Other members of the board include veteran journalist Kunle Solaja, as well as the Director General of the NIS, Prof. O. A. Moronkola, Mr. Awogbade Ayorinde Gbadebo and Commodore Nesiama Omatseye.

Lawrence Babatunde Aremu, Major General Okpeh Wilson Ali, retired AIG Hafiz Inuwa and Lawrence Babatunde Aremu are also on the new NIS board.

The other members are Dr. Fatima Kabir Umar, Boniface Odum, Salisu Manman Aliyu and Gregory Itohoh.

The sports minister urged the new board to elevate the NIS to world-class standards.
