MANCHESTER City’s Pep Guardiola was last night named the Manager of the Year by both the League Managers Association and the English Premier League.

It is the fourth time Spaniard has won the Premier League award, having also claimed it in three previous title-winning campaigns, in 2017/2018, 2018/2019 and 2020/2021.

Guardiola is now in second place for the most Manager of the Season awards, behind only Sir Alex Ferguson, who claimed it 11 times.

The 52-year-old was previously tied with Arsene Wenger and Jose Mourinho with three awards each.

“I’m delighted, it’s an incredible honour. I promise you next season we will be there to fight again to dignify this league as much as possible,” Guardiola told the Premier League website.

The former Barcelona manager is on the verge of the unique treble, having led City to their fifth Premier League title in six years and taken them to the finals of the FA Cup and UEFA Champions League.

City will face Manchester United in the FA Cup final on Saturday and Inter Milan in the Champions League final a week later as they seek to repeat their neighbours’ 1999 treble.

“I am at an incredible football club and without all of the support that I have had throughout my time here, this would not have been possible,” Guardiola said in a club statement.

For the Premier League award, Guardiola won after votes by the public were combined with those of a panel of football experts.

He won ahead of Arsenal’s Mikel Arteta, Brighton’s Roberto De Zerbi, Aston Villa’s Unai Emery, Newcastle United’s Eddie Howe and Fulham’s Marco Silva.

Arteta, De Zerbi, Howe, Burnley’s Vincent Kompany and Plymouth Argyle’s Steven Schumacher were his rivals for win the LMA award.
