NIGERIA Football Federation Alhaji Ibrahim Gusau has given a motivational speech to the Flying Eagles ahead of today’s quarter-final clash against South Korea at the FIFA U-20 World Cup in Argentina.

The Nigerian side face the Asians at the Estadio Único Madre de Ciudades in Santiago Del Estero with a semi-final spot at stake, and Gusau has told them they can do it.

The NFF President had a video call with players and officials of the team yesterday in which he charged them to make Nigeria proud.

Gusau also hailed the team for their resilience and victory against hosts Argentina in the round of 16 on Wednesday and urged them to put up even a stronger performance against South Korea today.

“Gentlemen, I want to use this medium to commend and congratulate you for the hard-fought win against Argentina,” he said.

“What you demonstrated was the true Nigerian spirit and I urge you to replicate the same against South Korea.

“The game is crucial and I believe you can do it for yourselves, your families and above all our dear nation, Nigeria. Nigerians are happy with your performance over there and are solidly behind you.”

The Flying Eagles are aiming for a semi-final ticket at the FIFA U-20 World Cup for the first time since 2005, when they reached the final under the guidance of Samson Siasia.

The 2005 squad, which had the likes of future Super Eagles stars Mikel Obi, Taiye Taiwo and Chinedu Obasi, lost to a Lionel Messi-inspired Argentina in the final.

Today’s encounter kicks off at 2.30pm Argentinian time (6.30pm Nigerian time).

Last night Israel stunned five-time champions Brazil 3-2 after extra-time to become the first team to reach the semi-finals, while Italy saw off Colombia 3-1.

If the Flying Eagles overcome South Korea today, they will reunite with Italy in the semi-finals in La Plata on Thursday.

Ladan Bosso’s side shocked the Europeans 2-0 in a Group D clash in Mendoza on May 24.
