THE Governor of Nasarawa State, Abdullahi Sule has declared the suspension of the 7th Nasarawa State Assembly’s inauguration.
The governor justified his decision by citing security concerns at the state assembly complex.
Governor Sule indicated in a statement issued by the acting clerk of the house, Ibrahim Musa, that the postponement of the assembly’s inauguration was due to security advice he received.
The statement read, “The Acting Clerk, Nasarawa State House of Assembly, Ibrahim Musa, wishes to inform all Honorable Members-elect and the general public that, based on security advice, the scheduled inauguration of the first session of the 7th Assembly, as directed by His Excellency, the Executive Governor of Nasarawa State, Engr. Abdullahi Sule, is hereby postponed.”
The statement also noted that a revised date and time for the inauguration would be informed to elected officials and the general public.
It ended by apologizing for any trouble caused by the postponement.
Meanwhile, the parliament has been wracked by a leadership crisis, which has caused confusion and mayhem.
Governor Sule has been supporting the incumbent speaker and this has created disagreement among assembly members.
Information gathered reveals that 13 out of the 24, majority members, who oppose the governor’s interference and support the speaker, gathered at the assembly gate as early as 3 a.m with the aim of preventing the inauguration from proceeding without their presence.
Furthermore, it was learnt that arrangements were made for the remaining 11 minority members to assemble at the assembly by 4 a.m., ahead of the scheduled 10 a.m. inauguration.
This arrangement was intended to exclude the majority of members who opposed the governor’s preferred speaker.
